Vortrag: Antike Aquädukte – Technische Weltwunder voller Schönheit und Rätsel
Jan 22, 2026
Zülpich
When we talk about ancient aqueducts, we immediately think of the Pont du Gard in southern France. As a bold structure 50 meters high, it spans the Gardon River to transport precious drinking water to the ancient city of Nîmes. Such constructions were numerous in antiquity – they impress us throughout the former Roman Empire. Their exploration is hindered by the absence of ancient building plans or design sketches. Therefore, anyone wishing to unlock the key to these technical wonders must trace their development from planning to construction execution from the perspective of the ancient engineer.
In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Klaus Grewe, scientific director of the Roman Canal Information Center in Rheinbach and an expert on historical water supply systems, will look at these technical masterpieces of antiquity, present numerous examples, and unveil some mysteries surrounding Roman aqueducts.
