"Kultuvision" mit Tristano Unchained & Julian Bossert Album Release: ID ENTITY

Oct 4, 2025

Dahlem-Kronenburg

The spirit of the panoramic moment is unleashed from the very first notes on "ID Entity", the second album by Cologne-based band Tristano Unchained & Julian Bossert.

Smoothness, elegance and respect for the achievements of jazz history enter into a very harmonious alliance with personal and collective playfulness that is completely anchored in the moment of creation.

Now the question arises as to what the music on "ID Entity" has to do with Lennie Tristano, as all the compositions are the band's own creations. The band's flow also has very little in common with the great New York jazz pioneer.

But Tristano is the starting point from which alto saxophonist Julian Bossert and his colleagues Stefan Karl Schmidt (tenor saxophone), Thomas Rückert (piano), Calvin Lennig (bass) and Fabian Arends (drums) set out on the first Tristano Unchained album "Wild Horses" in 2021. The delicate nervous system of Tristano can certainly still be felt here and there, but the five musicians have long since found their own chemistry. What the Cologne natives have over their role model and his bands is the fun they have making music, which can be heard everywhere. Although the band has a clearly recognizable signature on "ID Entity" in terms of ambition and communication, they search for a new sound and a new environment for every track. The playful adventure always enjoys top priority. "It has to be freedom, it has to be love, and then it happens," Bossert passionately postulates. The quintet seeks out surprise and torpedoes anything that could possibly restrict it.

The album is clearly a cornucopia of spontaneous ideas, but Bossert and co are not content to simply accept said ideas; they want to get to the bottom of their origins. "ID Entity" is an album whose gravitational beauty and playful voluptuousness invite you to listen, and that's a good thing. But if you want more, you will find countless approaches in the almost 50 minutes, which will inspire you to think beyond just listening and enrich the album with further ideas with each new run-through. And that's even better. Wolf Kampmann
