Die Tuchfabrik Forell – Aufstieg und Glanzzeiten

Roetgen

Once a vibrant production site – the Forell textile factory marked the heyday of Roetgen's weaving industry. What remains quietly recalls the economic upswing of the 19th century.

Back then, Roetgen became part of the large textile region between Aachen, Verviers, and Monschau. One of the most successful entrepreneurs of this era was Moritz August Forell. His factory on Postweg was considered modern and powerful: fine fabrics for shirts and dresses were produced there, in addition to the typical, robust cashmere fabrics of the region.

The residential and factory building of the family – still known today as the "Oberförsterei" – reflects this rise. Facade elements made of blue stone, casement windows, and the mansard roof showcase the architectural influences of the Couven era.

However, the heyday did not last forever. With changing markets and the decline of manual labor, many businesses lost their foundation. The Forell house remains – a quiet testament to the time when Roetgen's textile production reached even to the Prussian court.
