Aussicht über Zweifall: Konfessionen in der Landschaft

A path leads down here to Zweifall, home to its Evangelical Lutheran church. For the Reformed Christians from Roetgen, however, it was not a place they would visit.
This is because, in the 18th century, denominational differences were more than just matters of faith; they governed membership, canon law, and congregational organization. Even though Reformed and Lutheran believers were close in their faith, attending worship services across these denominational lines was uncommon.
Thus, the route to church did not lead to Zweifall or Monschau, but continued on to Stolberg. The proximity of these towns illustrates just how close the congregations were geographically—and yet how clearly they remained separate from one another.
This route was developed as part of the LEADER-funded project “Quality Initiative for Hiking in Roetgen and Stolberg” with support from the European Union (EAFRD) and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
