Lit.Eifel: "Russische Spezialitäten"
Jun 12, 2026
Kall
A family from Kyiv sells Russian specialties in Leipzig. Vodka, Pelmeni, SIM cards, sailor shirts – and a somehow Eastern European sense of belonging. However, the latter has been lost since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The mother stands by Putin's side. And her son, who loves no language more than Russian, no person more than his mother, and no city more than Kyiv, is desperate. It is not wise of him to return to Ukraine in the midst of war. But what should he do when there is simply no other way to bring Mama back from fascism and the crazy Russian television lies? A book that only Dmitrij Kapitelman can write: tragic, tender, and funny at the same time.
Dmitrij Kapitelman, born in 1986 in Kyiv, came to Germany as a “contingent refugee” with his family at the age of eight. He studied political science and sociology at the University of Leipzig and completed the German School of Journalism in Munich. Today, he works as a freelance journalist. In 2016, his first successful book The Smile of My Invisible Father was published, for which he won the Klaus Michael Kühne Prize. In 2021, he followed up with A Formality in Kyiv, for which he was awarded the Family Novel Book Prize from the Ravensburger Verlag Foundation.
