Lit.Eifel: "Lovely Rita"
Oct 7, 2026
Kall
In his new novel, Frank Goosen goes to the pub. More specifically, to the "Haus Himmelreich," the old corner pub where stories and destinies intersect: There is the counter cockpit with the captain, the tall one, and Willi Trommer, guys who have been sitting here since time immemorial. There is Gisela, the art beer pourer, the juniper Annie with God's toolbox, Faris, the comedian, Harry, the old Social Democrat, Carlo, who looks like Cat Stevens, or even the Countess, who has seen the whole world but sometimes lives in an old song. Above all, there is Rita Urbaniak, Lovely Rita, the landlady who originally wanted to do something completely different but then life got in the way. And her sister Chris, born during the war, who has always been traveling the world in search of what one might casually call happiness.
Between a round for the gentlemen and a group for the ladies, grounding happens before the drinking begins; it means paying and being friendly, and turning two sixes into a one on the second throw only works when rolling dice on Maundy Thursday.
In "Lovely Rita," Frank Goosen tells humorously and warmly about an endangered ecosystem: the pub. And isn't it absurd that the froth on a pilsner is called "Blume" (flower) while the glass is called "Tulpe" (tulip)?
