Ein Werkverzeichnis und die Folgen. 40 Jahre Ophey-Forschung

At almost the same time, he was co-curator of an exhibition on the artist at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. The discovery of Ophey's private estate in an attic by Kraus was a stroke of luck for the exhibition and the accompanying catalog, as well as for art historical research as a whole. His Ophey monograph with a comprehensive catalog raisonné was published in 1993. For Kraus, Walter Ophey was always more than a mere "subject"; to this day, he feels responsible for the rehabilitation of the artist, who died prematurely at the age of 48 and was ostracized by the National Socialist regime. In a free lecture, he will share his insights into the life and work of the Rhenish Expressionist using the exhibited works of the Dr. Axe Foundation as examples.
Stefan Kraus, born in 1960, studied art history, German language and literature and education. He worked as a freelance curator from 1983, including for the Kölnischer Kunstverein. In 1991 he became curator at the Diözesanmuseum Köln, today's KOLUMBA, which he has headed since 2008.
