Fotografie-Forum: Pietro Donzelli "ZWISCHENZEITEN"
May 10, 2026 - Aug 2, 2026
Monschau
Pietro Donzelli (1915–1998) is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Italian photography. He shaped the genre not only through his own photographic work but also as an exhibition curator and editor of the professional journal Fotografia. The exhibition presents images from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s – a time marked by significant upheaval in Italy. It is this interlude that Donzelli captures in his work. In his photographs, the past meets modernity, just as the sparse life in the countryside is contrasted with the bustling activity in the cities. It is these fascinating contrasts that characterize Italy after World War II. Thus, a walk through the exhibition is akin to a journey through the country, but also through time.
Donzelli masterfully draws us into these atmospheric snapshots as if by magic. The black-and-white photographs convey a special tranquility through their balanced compositions. The light creates atmospheric scenes. Time seems to stand almost still in these photographs. However, the images also reflect Donzelli's great love for his country and its people. Between 1953 and 1961, for example, he traveled the entire Po Delta, documenting the ever-changing landscape. In addition to classic landscape photographs, the exhibition also features portraits of people along the way, such as fishermen, farmers, tailors, or café owners.
