Fotografie-Forum: JÜRGEN KLAUKE
Nov 8, 2026 - Dec 20, 2026
Monschau
Jürgen Klauke is undoubtedly one of the most important performance, photo, and media artists in Germany and has played a significant role in shaping these genres. The artist living in Cologne has made groundbreaking contributions in the field of body art and in the critical examination of socially normative (gender) identities and social behavior patterns. To this day, he deals with seemingly fixed role models that reveal themselves, through his art, to be as fragile as human life itself. Klauke is not "just" a photographer, but an artist who uses photography as a tool to question himself and the world. With his complex bodies of work addressing questions of human existence, he has been setting standards for future generations of artists for a long time. Since the early 1970s, a time when art and theory discourses were not yet defined by body art and gender studies, Klauke has examined the sexual fundamental and behavioral patterns pre-shaped by our culture and questions them with his often provocative photographs. He uses his body—mostly his own—unyieldingly as a central means of expression. Beyond the themes of sexuality and society, the human existence with its ubiquitous abysses remains at the center of his work to this day. Artworks by Jürgen Klauke can now be found in significant museums and collections. Recently, MoMA in New York acquired a collection of his works. For his extraordinary life's work and his contributions to photography, Jürgen Klauke will receive the Art Award from the Photography Forum of the StädteRegion Aachen this year.
