The printmaking was a challenging and versatile field of activity for Düsseldorf artists in the 19th century: It ranged from reproductions of famous painting templates, to illustrations in books, to independent artists' graphics. Various printing techniques such as etching, wood engraving, or lithography were employed.
The current exhibition in the Kunstkabinett provides a comprehensive insight into the graphic collection of the Dr. Axe Foundation for the first time. It presents artists such as J. P. Hasenclever, C. F. Lessing, J. W. Schirmer, among others, who dedicated themselves to both painting and printmaking in their work. The juxtaposition of about 20 paintings and 40 graphics reveals thematic preferences, technical skill, and a great versatility in artistic expression.
