Historischer Ortskern Kommern
Mechernich
On a walk through Kommern, you can delve deep into the town’s history. The first written record dates back to 1229, but the town’s roots go back much further. Over the centuries, the Dukes of Arenberg, lead mining, and the town’s favorable location between the Eifel and Cologne/Bonn shaped Kommern’s development.
The historic townscape is particularly worth seeing: Kommern boasts one of the most cohesive and beautiful ensembles of 17th- and 18th-century half-timbered village houses in the Rhineland. Some of the oldest houses even date back to the 16th century. You can also still discover traces of the former lead mining—during World War II, the old tunnels also provided shelter from air raids.
Today, Kommern combines its eventful past with a vibrant local community. On a stroll through the historic streets, you’ll discover numerous well-preserved buildings and experience how history and the present naturally coexist here.
