Handwerk und Hämmer – Spuren von Arbeit im Dorf

Stolberg

If you had been here many years ago, you would probably have heard noises: knocking, sawing, grinding, drilling. For a long time, Vicht was a place where people worked a lot with their hands.

As in many villages, craftsmanship was part of everyday life. Accordingly, countless things were repaired, built and manufactured because they were needed to live. The proximity to water is no coincidence. Work was often easier to organize where a stream flowed: Water was there, paths were created and some things could be moved with its power.

Today, the village sounds different and many workshops have disappeared. Nevertheless, small clues remain that you can only see if you walk slowly and look closely: hidden in the masonry, as a small sign, as a sign on the house or as a special detail made of stone or metal.

Search for traces of craftsmanship: Keep your eyes open along the way for a sign or detail that reminds you of former craftsmanship. And think about: What work could have gone into it?
