Who’s ever been deep underground? Would you like to go on a treasure hunt or explore the tunnels in the dark with just a flashlight? No matter what the weather is like outside, it’s always the same underground. On guided tours specially tailored for children, kids can explore “The Eifel from Below”—with informative or exciting elements.
Guided tours of the former galena mine are offered twice daily for individual visitors.
They begin at the “Grubenhaus,” where visitors can also view a small, themed exhibition. A comfortable flight of stairs leads down to the “Tiefen Stollen,” which is open to visitors along a stretch of about 800 meters, including several side tunnels. Visitors can discover traces of mining from the late Middle Ages through to the 19th century, when black powder was still used for blasting. After 1890, ore was transported using the Eifel’s first electric mine train! There is much to learn about the lives of the miners and the geological history of the Eifel. A special feature are the drawings on the walls of the “Deep Tunnel,” which are over 100 years old.
