Am Hasselbachgraben – Technik im Wald

Stolberg

A stream that is planned: the Hasselbachgraben looks natural - and yet it is an artificial hydraulic structure in the forest.

If you walk along the Hasselbachgraben, you will see a streambed that runs through the forest and meadows. However, the ditch was created by humans and combines technical water management with a design that blends into the landscape.

Watercourses have been altered since the Middle Ages in order to reliably supply mills, forges and fields. Artificial ditches also shaped the valleys around Stolberg so that copper yards and hammer mills had enough water power.

Today, the Hasselbachgraben performs a different function: it channels additional surface water into the Dreilägerbach dam, which supplies the region with drinking water.
