In 2016, a total of 17 buildings designed by Le Corbusier were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List—spanning several countries and continents. This transnational World Heritage site includes residential buildings, villas, high-rise apartment buildings, museums, a monastery, a church, and government buildings in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, as well as in Argentina, India, and Japan.

Le Corbusier was far more than just an architect: He worked as a painter, sculptor, urban planner, and theorist, and his ideas shaped modern architecture worldwide. His designs inspired entire generations of architects, but they also provoked controversy and heated debate. With radical visions and provocative theories, he influenced the development of what is now considered architectural modernism.

Thomas Brandt’s lecture explores Le Corbusier’s life and work and highlights the enormous breadth of his creative output. Among others, the following will be presented in detail: the famous Villa Savoye near Paris, the Unité d’habitation in Marseille, the Notre-Dame-du-Haut Chapel in Ronchamp, Le Cabanon on the French Riviera, and Le Corbusier’s houses in Stuttgart’s Weissenhofsiedlung.
