AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC
The blues is probably one of the few traditional attitudes that will never be on the red list of endangered species, at least not as long as there are people of any color. In reality, however, the blues is not a state of mind, but an animal that attacks you like a thief: namely when you don't want it.
This animal doesn't just live in Chicago.
It doesn't just hide in the cotton fields of the South either.
It can swim!
And so it swam far east to the capital of aspirin during the McCarthy era. To where the very pale people live (people like winter). There it bit into the biggest belly it could find: that of Peter Nonn, then still a tender child and today probably the greatest living blues musician of his homeland, unfortunately not blessed with sun and cotton and bourbon; - at least the most serious.
This steadfast man has carried the animal around with him for many years now, like a dear friend to whom he is tenderly attached. And because this animal of the American South is a chameleon-like creature, the music of the Peter Nonn Band is also constantly changing its colors.
Sometimes it sounds in a deep blue minor key, crawling like a snake into the melodies of an 80-year-old dobro. At other times, it comes along in country blues garb and dances exuberantly to the banjo in a harvested cotton field. Ukulele sounds take us to Hawaii, shortly afterwards we find ourselves in a Harlem ballroom. A chameleon has many colors.
You can call it all blues. You can call the Peter Nonn Band a blues band. In reality, it is much more: the Peter Nonn Band invites us for an evening on a great musical journey along the paths of AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC.
