When Konrad Adenauer was elected the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 at the age of 73, he had experienced two world wars, the downfall of a monarchy, the failure of a parliamentary republic, and the rule of a totalitarian dictatorship. Whether the West German post-war democracy would last was by no means certain. His goal was therefore to stabilize it as quickly and irrevocably as possible.

This biography takes a look at the man Adenauer and his personal environment. At the same time, it paints a nuanced picture of his politics, which were shaped by the experiences of a life in times of upheaval.

Holger Löttel, Dr. phil., born in 1977, is the head of the Department of Edition and Scholarship at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bad Honnef-Rhöndorf. As part of the "Rhöndorfer Edition," he has edited extensive source editions on the coalition, economic, and Eastern policies of the Adenauer era. He lives in Bad Honnef.
