Geführte Wanderung "Vom Kloster in den Heidehimmel"
Jun 13, 2026
Kall-Steinfeld
The Steinfeld Monastery is one of the oldest and once most powerful monasteries in the Eifel region. The monastery was first mentioned in documents in the year 1121. To this day, the basilica of the monastery is a pilgrimage site where an ancient custom is still practiced. We will learn about this custom during our hike. First, you will walk through the idyllic valley of the Kuttenbach. The landscape gradually opens up until we reach the Sistiger Heath. Here, we are greeted by a unique landscape of rough, nutrient-poor grassland rich in rare plants and animals. In geography and botany, heathlands are defined as open, nutrient-poor areas predominantly covered by shrubs, grasses, and specific plants. Despite the barren soils and open landscape, heathlands are home to a high diversity of species, including orchids, arnica, cotton grasses, and the rare lungwort gentian. To conclude our hike, we will visit the basilica and the monastery garden with its labyrinth made up of 2000 red beeches, measuring 25 meters in diameter.
