Geführte Wanderung "Vom Kloster in den Heidehimmel"
Aug 10, 2025
Kall-Steinfeld
Steinfeld Monastery is one of the oldest and formerly most powerful monasteries in the Eifel region. The monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1121. To this day, the basilica of the monastery is a place of pilgrimage where an ancient custom is still practiced. We get to know this custom during our hike. First you walk through the idyllic valley of the Kuttenbach. The landscape becomes more and more open until we reach the Sistiger Heide. Here, a unique landscape of bristly nutrient-poor grassland with a wealth of rare plants and animals awaits us. In geography and botany, heathland refers to open and nutrient-poor areas that are predominantly covered with shrubs, grasses and special plants. Despite the poor soil and open landscape, heaths are home to a high diversity of species. These include orchids, arnica, cotton grass and the rare lung gentian. At the end of the hike, we visit the basilica and the monastery garden with its labyrinth consisting of 2000 copper beeches and a diameter of 25 meters.
