Eifel heimisch: Vom Kloster in den Heidehimmel
Aug 8, 2026
Kall-Steinfeld
Steinfeld Abbey is one of the oldest and formerly most powerful abbeys in the Eifel region. The abbey was first mentioned in a document in 1121. To this day, the monastery’s basilica remains a place of pilgrimage where an ancient custom is still observed. We’ll learn about this custom during our hike.
First, you’ll hike through the idyllic Kuttenbach Valley. The landscape gradually opens up until we reach the Sistiger Heide. Here, a unique landscape of nutrient-poor heathland awaits us, teeming with rare plants and animals. In geography and botany, the term “heath” refers to open, nutrient-poor areas covered primarily by shrubs, grasses, and specific plants. Despite the barren soil and open landscape, heaths are home to a high level of biodiversity. These include orchids, arnica, cottongrass, and the rare lungwort. To conclude the hike, we’ll visit the basilica and the monastery garden with its labyrinth consisting of 2,000 red beeches and measuring 25 meters in diameter.
The loop hike is approximately 14 km long.
Since we’ll be walking on trails with exposed roots in some sections, the hike is not suitable for strollers
