The historic Christmas market provides a festive finale to the year’s events at the medieval Satzvey Castle. On all four Advent weekends—Saturdays and Sundays—visitors can enjoy the sprawling market and its romantic atmosphere with the whole family.

The warm glow of the lights enchants the festively decorated castle grounds, and the scent of cinnamon and incense fills the air. Numerous market stalls invite you to take a leisurely stroll and linger. The historic nativity play—known far beyond the state’s borders—and imaginative activities for children make the castle Christmas a special experience for young and old alike.

Medieval Nativity Play With elaborate costumes and meticulous set design—including animals—the historic nativity play is modeled after the High Middle Ages. Under the open sky, the Christmas story comes to life in Latin and Middle High German—accompanied by the ringing of bells and proclamations in German translation.

Santa Claus and Elves
Santa Claus personally collects the children’s wish lists on site. His hardworking elves bustle about, slipping visitors the occasional sweet treat. On Saturdays until 3 p.m., children can bring a boot or a hat to have Santa fill it.

Christmas Market Atmosphere
The spacious Christmas market is a wonderful place to browse and enjoy yourself, as various vendors offer regional goods, sweet treats, and savory delicacies. Whether it’s Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys, nativity scenes, or other handicrafts—there’s the perfect gift and lovely souvenir for everyone.

Santa Claus and Elves
Santa Claus will be on site with his elves to collect the children’s wish lists. His elves, dressed in their festive attire, will be bustling about, handing out the occasional sweet treat to visitors. In addition, stuffed animals and toys that have been donated and are now looking for a new home will be distributed. On Saturdays until 3:00 p.m., children can have their boots—which they’ve brought along—filled.

Nativity play several times a day: Saturdays between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sundays between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Since this is an outdoor event, we recommend wearing sturdy (weather-resistant) footwear.
Satzvey Castle is located directly on the Cologne–Trier rail line, so it’s easy to get there by public transportation.
