Ausstellung: "Luxuria. Römische Thermen zwischen Alltag und Luxus"
May 24, 2025 - Mar 1, 2026
Zülpich
The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the splendor of Roman bathing facilities. The expense that the Romans sometimes went to for the construction and furnishing of their thermal baths was enormous: precious marble, elaborate mosaics and exquisite fragrances were sometimes transported hundreds of kilometers to the Rhineland, ensuring a stylish bathing experience. Archaeological research confirms the sometimes impressive size and splendor of the thermal baths. Even smaller buildings such as the thermal baths in Zülpich fascinate with their technical sophistication.
The exhibition brings together a unique ensemble of finds from the Roman north-western provinces: prominent lenders include the LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn, the LVR-Archäologische Park Xanten / LVR-RömerMuseum, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier and the town of Zülpich. The exhibition not only focuses on large thermal baths in cities, but also looks at the private bathing facilities of the numerous Roman villas, for example in the Zülpich Börde and the surrounding area.
Hands-on stations for young and old, an accompanying audio guide on your own smartphone and an attractive supporting program invite you to experience the magnificent Roman bathing world with all your senses.
The exhibition is supported by the Regional Cultural Fund of the Rhineland Regional Association.
