Wenn die Nacht erwacht – nachtaktive Tiere im Wald

Stolberg

By day, the forest appears still, but at night it comes alive: many animals that are hardly visible during the day become active at dusk and at night.

Bats hunt insects in flight and use tree cavities or tunnels as daytime shelters. Owls, like the tawny owl, silently search for prey, while deer or wild boars move through the underbrush. Beetles and moths also become active - building blocks in the forest's food web.
Night-active species are sensitive to disturbances. Artificial light, noise, and a heavily simplified forest structure can restrict their habitat. The quieter a forest is and the more diverse structures it offers, the better the conditions for this nocturnal life.

Tip for night-active hikers: If you're out in the evening, take a minute to pause. Without a flashlight, without mobile phone light. Listen carefully: What suddenly appears that wasn't "there" before?
