Wasserbunker bei Süssendell – Versorgung im Verborgenen

Stolberg

This was not about battles, but about supply – quietly and systematically. In the middle of the forest near Süssendell lies a structure that is easy to overlook: a water bunker from the time of World War II.

The bunker collected and stored fresh water and channeled it to surrounding military positions, barracks, and depots. Although it did not include large buildings or machinery, it was still an important part of the military infrastructure and supply chain.

Today, the bunker serves as a memorial site. It shows that wars do not only take place at front lines, but also in networks of logistics and supply that reach deep into people's everyday lives and into the landscape. Even though it is only recognizable at a second glance and almost disappears under moss and vegetation, it remains part of this story.

It is worth taking a look: Take a few steps closer and examine the surface more closely. Where do you still see straight edges, small openings or the transition between stone and concrete? Where does the forest begin, where does the bunker end?
