Ewig & Selt Spirituosenfabrik

Monschau

The Nießen family business founded in 1875 at Rehmplatz 10 in Aachen was bought and taken over in 1897 by Wilhelm Ewig and son-in-law Selt. Later it was handed over to the son Eugen Ewig and then Friedrich Ewig and his brother Willi Ewig continued the business. After Friedrich's death (1991), his daughter Nicole Ewig took over. When Uncle Willi also died in 2007, Nicole took over the business 4 years later on her own through the acquisition of shares from her cousin Astrid Mommertz, née Ewig. Since 2011, Nicole Ewig has been running the spirits factory, which is now in its fourth generation, and has become a tradition. By the end of 2018 the company was sold outside of the family and since then it has been taken over by Ralf Beaujean (26 years a member of Ewig&Selt GmbH) and his friend Burkhard Spang. The tradition should not end here, but is carried on with passion according to original recipes. Here, generations of knowledge and expansions have been collected through company takeovers, resulting in a unique collection of competence that is older than the company's own founding in 1875. The origin of Els in the Monschau area as Montjoi'r Els is in production with 6 traditional varieties The production was decades in Gut Reichenstein and in Aachen Burtscheid. Since the Els is an "Eifel child", specifically to be assigned to the Monschau region, production should also remain there. The exodus from Reichenstein/Monschau to Monschau and then to Konzen/Monschau traditionally held on to the Monschau "Eifelwasser" and the Els tradition. Likewise, of course, "Natural own herbal extracts from regional herbs from the Hohen-Fens. Over the years since 1875, the trade in wines and spirits has lost importance, instead the focus is on specializing in spirits production as a spirits factory. Herb bitters such as Bonnekamp and various types of Pikkoloˋś with the 6 Els variants almost represent a specialization in herbs. A deliberate outlier of these Eifler herbal products is the Aachener Printen liqueur, as a sweet temptation alongside the herbal bitters. It found its origins in the main store at Aachen's Rehmplatz as "Printe liquid in liqueur form". Also fruit liqueur and grain, as well as double juniper are still in the production repertoire. Unfortunately, some of the history has disappeared due to 2 world wars and robbery - we are always happy to receive messages for our history!

Contrary to the general trend, everything is made by hand. The result is a product in which at least one of the two managing directors has passionately produced, stuffed, labeled and delivered the bottle himself. With many a bottle, both owners have even been involved in manual work - this is rather a rarity nowadays and gives each bottle an individual character!
