Erste Sägewerke in Zweifall – der Klang der Maschinen im Wald

Stolberg

With the end of the charcoal era, a new era began: industrial wood processing. A time that not only shaped Zweifall, but also changed it.

When the first spruce stands around Zweifall were ready for harvesting, numerous sawmills were built from the middle of the 19th century. Initially driven by water power, later by steam and electricity. The new machines enabled faster processing, larger quantities and more varied products.

The steady whirring of the saws and the beating of the gates shaped everyday life in Zweifall: the forest became a workplace and timber an economic factor. This not only changed the town, but also the lives of many people.

Today, only a few businesses are still active. But in the museum sawmill at the Zweifall forester's lodge, you can still experience first-hand the role that wood, work and technology played in the history of the village.
