EifelRadSchleife 7 "Wo Ritter Feste feiern"

Mechernich

This EifelRadSchleife is perfect for nature lovers who want to combine a challenging cycle tour in the Eifel with nature and sights. The start and finish point is Mechernich, where there are plenty of opportunities to reward yourself after the tour.

The route leads across fields, forests and meadows, sometimes on rough ground in a hilly topography. A varied landscape awaits you and benches invite you to linger and enjoy the view.

Halfway along the route is Satzvey Castle, which is an ideal place to take a break in a medieval atmosphere with its restaurants and castle bakery. A short detour to Veynau Castle and/or Kommern Castle is also worthwhile, although they can only be visited from the outside.

Kommern with its historic town center invites you to take a stroll. Here you will find the largest closed half-timbered ensemble in the Rhineland, the castle from the 15th to 18th centuries, the neo-Gothic church and many places to stop for a bite to eat. Behind the Mühlensee lake is the Mühlental recreation and generation park with leisure facilities for every generation.

The uniform signposting system consists of red junction signs and information signs at all important junctions and crossroads, providing a perfect orientation system along the way.
Junctions on the route: 90, 55, 86, 3, 87, 88, 90

Tip: From September to mid-November, a large pumpkin show with impressive pumpkin sculptures made from over 100,000 pumpkins takes place at the Krewelshof.
The Krewelshof in Mechernich-Obergartzem can be reached quickly via a short detour.

Welcome to Rosige Zeiten, Ferien im Fachwerkhaus! We rent out our listed and lovingly renovated half-timbered house in the historic centre of Kommern. The house has an enclosed courtyard, which offers space for relaxation and recreation. We have furnished our cottage with selected old furniture that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of comfort. The individual furnishings create a cosy atmosphere that distracts from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Low Ceilings, sloping walls and floors and steep stairs add to the character of a half-timbered house. The spacious, comfortable bathroom with walk-in shower and bathtub leaves no wellness wishes unfulfilled. For those who want to warm themselves by the wood stove in case of bad weather, firewood is of course available in the courtyard. Otherwise, the underfloor heating on the ground floor ensures a feeling of well-being. In summer temperatures, a robust column barbecue ensures a holiday mood. Bicycles or e-bikes can be stored in our lockable shed with power supply. In our reading room, guests have access to a selection of Eifel crime novels and a wealth of information material. Due to the age of the cottage and the preservation order, the staircase is steep and not equipped with a balustrade (see photo hallway upstairs). Details ansehen

The watercourses and their floodplains are a typical and ecologically valuable part of the Rureifel with a great wealth of flora and fauna. This diversity is thanks to the farmers who have mowed the meadows for centuries. When modern forms of farming close to villages made haymaking in the valleys no longer worthwhile, spruce trees were planted there. Efforts are currently being made in many places to restore the original floodplain vegetation. The characteristic terracing can be seen in many places along the hiking trail. This occurs when a river is no longer able to transport its debris and deposits it in the floodplain. If a river deepens again due to a change in climate, it cuts through the previously formed terrace. The formerly swampy valleys of the Eifel only acquired their function as traffic routes after the river regulation at the beginning of the 20th century.

Am Seeufer [J] | MTB-Tour Freifahrt Eifel

From the narrow Rur valley, head east (clockwise) up to the edge of the Börde. From there, the route continues undulating to Hergarten. Different vegetation, wide forest paths, steep trails and several ups and downs make this tour a very long and varied, but moderately difficult panoramic ride. You can start from the parking lots at the Heimbach or Abenden national park gate stations, at the Eschauel bathing beach or north and south of the Schwammenauel dam.
