Bunker 755a/755b – Relikte des Westwalls

What initially appear to be two inconspicuous boulders are in fact solidly built military installations: bunkers 755a and 755b, remnants of the former Westwall.
The Westwall was a large-scale defensive line of the German Reich during the Second World War. It was built along the western border from 1938 and consisted of a widely ramified system of bunkers, positions and barriers to secure the area militarily.
The construction followed a clear purpose. Thick reinforced concrete walls, often additionally covered with earth, were intended to provide protection from shelling and camouflage the facilities. The bunkers were primarily used for observation and as shelters and retreats.
The facilities near Süssendell were part of this military network. Today, they no longer have a function - they are stone testimonies to a time when the region was directly affected by the war.
