Baumeister mit Biss – wie der Biber unsere Landschaft verändert

Stolberg

Here at the Omerbach, one can observe how strongly a single animal can shape its environment: When a tree lies across the water in the stream, it was not a storm at work, but a skilled builder.

The European beaver shapes entire water landscapes with its teeth and branches, thereby creating new habitats such as ponds, pools, and bank areas.

These retreats created by it act like natural reservoirs in the forest: They retain rainwater, enrich the groundwater, and provide protection during heavy rain. In this way, beavers actively contribute to forests being able to withstand the effects of climate change better.

Around Schevenhütte, the beaver has now become native again. Its dams, feeding traces, and lodges tell of how animals can become landscape architects – and how closely their actions are connected to the balance of nature.
