Baumeister mit Biss – wie der Biber unsere Landschaft verändert

Stolberg

Here at the Omerbach stream, you can see how strongly a single animal can shape its environment: If a tree lies across the water by the stream, it was not a storm that was at work here, but a skilled master builder.

The European beaver shapes entire water landscapes with its teeth and branches, creating new habitats such as ponds, pools and riparian zones.

These retreats they create act as natural reservoirs in the forest: they hold back rain, recharge the groundwater and offer protection during heavy rainfall. In this way, beavers actively help forests to better withstand the consequences of climate change.

The beaver has now returned to the area around Schevenhütte. Its dams, feeding traces and castles tell of how animals themselves become landscape designers - and how closely their work is linked to the balance of nature.
